On day three, we ventured out to see more of the island. We had heard a lot about a place called Paradise Cove; Deadman’s Reef and wanted to see it. Supposedly the snorkeling is great. We reserved a car yesterday but decided this morning to be more adventurous and try out the public bus system. Glad we did AND glad we had all day to do it. It cost about $6 per person one way vs. $82 for the car rental. We were very proud of ourselves.
We loaded our snorkel gear into the bus and off we went. Apparently the bus system is a bunch of minivans with no set sc
hedules or fares. The driver can come and go and do whatever he wants on his own time, “island time.”
On our way to Paradise Cove we;
* Waited for the driver to run into Burger King and pick himself up some lunch;
* Picked up some groceries for a lady who didn’t get on the bus herself;
* Dropped something off at a beauty parlor;
* Went to a meat store to try and find the lady who dropped off her groceries;
* Passed right by several people at a bus stop trying to wave us down;
* Passed, stopped, and backed up, for a kid who was walking along the side of the road. Apparently the driver knew him and wanted to ask him if he had found a job.
We eventually made it to our destination. It took 2 hours to go 25 miles. We have learned that the term “island time” is real.
The weather has been windy the whole time we’ve been here and today was no exception. The snorkeling was not the greatest. We didn’t see much at all, but a couple of small fis
h and a whole lot of sea grass. What a bummer. We did however “experience” the island via a bus ride and met some very nice locals. We met and mingled with a toothless woman called “mama” and talked with a very nice bus driver about the islands. He answered a question we had posted in a previous blog about the drinking age. It’s 18 which explains a lot!

We made it back to the hotel just in time for an early evening rain storm. Lisa wound down with a relaxing pilates class and I in the gym. We cleaned up and ate dinner in a restaurant on the resort grounds and called it a day.
