Bahamas day 3 - Island Exploration and Spelunking

It took three days to talk Lisa into getting on a scooter with me. In the Bahamas, they drive on the left-hand side of the road with many turn-a-bouts. It can be very tricky. Needless to say she was worried about her life. Unnecessarily I might add.

The island is still recovering from hurricane Francis and Jane, which devastated most of the island in 2004. Much of the island’s venues are still closed and under construction today, four years later. As we scootered down the road, it was apparent by the damage to the structures, trees and landscape.

We took the scooter down the Grand Bahama Highway to the Lucayan National Park. We explored ancient Lucayan Indian caves where one of the longest underground water systems in the world exists. The caves are filled with fresh water and are home to many rare fresh water fish and crustaceans. It’s amazing to me that a small island can even have underground fresh water.

We then hiked a short nature walk through thick mangroves to the most beautiful beach where parts of the Pirates of the Caribbean were filmed.

I’m starting a new way to describe distance. As in temperature, when they say; “The temperature’s 40 degrees but feels like 20 below”, I’m going to say we drove 30 miles but it felt like 90.
